Day 35 - Mar 27

We slept great last night. The temp got into the low 50's which is just perfect sleeping weather. Some small animal or maybe even a small deer may have walkee through our campsite, but Walker moved and the thing scurried off. We fell asleep under the stars again but when we awoke there was a thin cloud cover so we didnt get a good sunrise. No issue there though.

We were awake by 645 and on the trail by 745, which was the earliest we have been on the trail in quite some time. The morning had several small ridges that we climbed over, and as the blue sky came out so did the heat. Thankfully, the morning wasnt to hot.

We had a beautiful view off of one of the mountains we climbed in the morning looking down below into Rye Valley. I was amazed at how green the grass was in the valley. There was a stream flowing through it and the surrounding mountains towered over the valley. The view looked like something out of a fantasy world.

As the day progressed, so did the heat. By 11 the temp was in the low 70's and it was nothing but a blue sky. Although this is almost a perfect temp to relax in, hiking is a different story. Plus, today was probably the hottest day on trail so far. We were absolutely dripping as we ascended glade mountain. Our time was fine, but it seemed as though we were in the oven.

Once we got to the top of glade, we enjoyed some lunch and relaxation. We had 7 miles to go to get into Atkins and it was only 1. We wanted to get into Atkins by 330 so if we wanted / were able to do a quick resupply and keep going we would have the time to do so.

As we ascended glade mountain the oven got cranked up. Going from 4000 feet to 2000 feet sapped the energy out of us. By the time we reached Atkins the temp was in the high 70's and it was so hot! Tomorrow is supposed to be low / mid 80's... we might burn up.

Getting into Atkins was very nice though, we relaxed at a truck stop for 2 hours and charged our phones slightly and ate some sandwiches and ice cream. Sadly the pizza place and Mexican place were closed due to the coronavirus but that's how it goes.

We left Atkins by 515 and made it to our campsite around 6. 91 miles to Pearisburg.

Goodnight,
Tyler M.

  1. Good deal that you.are able to resupply that's a huge.bonus. the.views continue to be fantastic so no let down there. Be safe out there, Corona virus fears are driving the news and making people even crazier than normal.
