Day 28 - Mar 20
Sleeping on a comfy mattress with cozy sheets is just the best. I slept incredible last night. It's funny, before starting this hike, I was rather particular about how I slept. Now, I could care less really, everything is comfortable and I'll sleep however. I'll be curious if that stays the same after the hike or if it will only be a short term change.
We started moving this morning by 715. We had a fantastic breakfast of 3 chicken breasts. That was breakfast. It was good.
We started packing up after breakfast and by 930 we were back on our way to the trail. It's hard leaving the comforts of every day life. I slept great, I ate good food, and chose whether or not I would get wet.
I want to get to Maine. I dont care what conditions I have to go through to get there. I am determined. We have probably already faced every type of condition we are going to face. Now we just have to endure them for less than 1800 miles.
As a side note, today is the start of our 5th week out here I believe. Time feels like it is flying by but also as if it is barely moving. Some days, 2 miles feels impossible, yet we have hiked more than 410 miles now... a strange dynamic.
We started hiking at 10 today, apart from a 2 mile climb to start, the elevation was rather mild today. Even so, with 4.5 days of food in our packs and our bodies slightly relaxed from our day off, we immediately found ourselves in our usual conundrum of struggling after leaving a town.
With easier terrain today, our feet our legs never got really sore. Our shoulders and back on the other hand, a different story. Every couple of miles we took a break to eat food and rest of shoulders. Even though we have our packs adjusted to fit our preferences of how weight is distributed, theres only so much you can do. The difference in weight between a half day of food versus 4 and a half days of food is painfully clear. Either way, with each passing day we will get rid of food and then repeat the process over again... no problem at all.
We got to camp at 430 today. We decided to have a shorter day today due to the heavy weight and also to simply allow our bodies to get back into the swing of things again.
The weather for the day was rain. From 11 to 1 it drizzled. After 1 the rain was faily constant but was typically a gentle rain. Thankfully, we had a 1 hour window this evening to set up our tents and cook dinner without it raining. However, with just a few minutes left until our evening chores were done, the sky absolutely opened up. We are supposed to get a half inch tonight but I wouldn't be surprised if we got a half inch in the 5 minutes we were scrambling about trying to get into our tents.
For our mileage, we walked from 19e to a campsite just past hardcore cascades. Somewhere between a 15 and 16 mile day.
We plan on being in damascus in 3 days, which is 60 miles from now. Tomorrow, depending on how we feel, we may do a 27 mile day... but we will see about that.
It feels good to be back in the woods.
Goodnight,
Tyler M.
