Day 5 : Feb 26
Owls are just roosters that holler at night instead of morning.
Slept pretty good last night. The tempurate dropped more than expected, was supposed to be mid 40's, ended up being high 30's. That's my best guess anyway. It took me a little longer to fall asleep last night because two or 3 bard owls just kept going at it. Now it's not every night you get to hear owls but after a long day of hiking I'm not quite in the mood to hear who who for hours on end. Still, I slept good enough and got to listen to some opera performed by a trio of owls. Pretty cool.
We got moving around 6, cooked breakfast, tore down camp, filtered and filled up water, and were on our way by 8. By 10 we had almost gone 6 miles and stopped to eat at blue mountain shelter.
The day went a bit slower after that. We summited three 4000 footers today with each one having a prominence of 1000 feet. My ankle gave me a bit of problems today and Walkers knee got the better of him today. Hopefully we can figure out some solution for him tomorrow in Hiawassee.
We hiked 13 miles today. From the unofficial campsite last night to tray mountain shelter (45.2 to 58.1)
Overall it was a good day, just hoping to heal up over the next two days. I'm really looking forward to getting into tower and eating good food for the first time in nearly a week. I plan on getting some tacos or a burrito, a steak, a chicken breast, and maybe a pizza…. Now that sounds good.
Little bit of a shorter blog tonight but its snowing right now and I'm tucked in a warm bed and dont feel like doing a single thing. Looking forward to writing the blog from a real bed tomorrow!
Goodnight,
Tyler M.
We're following along on the map and wouldn't you know it, we expected you to be at the Tray Mtn. shelter area tonight. Not sure why but we seem to get better perspective using Google Maps with the earth view. It provides a good look at the shelters and places you pass thru and stop at such as the street view of the Mountain Crossings hostel.
ReplyDeleteAlso, there is a product called Instaflex (used to be called OxyRub PRO) which was formulated by a Dr. Pergolizzi. In my experience there is no better pain reliever for major ("pulled" and strained) muscle and joint pain. So, the question is how do we get some to you?
Grandparents
Hey, I'll give yall a call tomorrow in town. We can work something out 👍
DeleteBarred owls really make.a.ruckus.when they start hooting. Also they have a tendency to fly thru obstacles not around them. Hang in there guys....nothing worth doing comes easy.
DeleteLol... "who - who". You are bagging an incredible number of 4K'ers already. Unfortunate that Walker's knee is giving him so much pain. A zero day in Hiawassee should really help. Tacos, a burrito, a steak, a chicken breast, and maybe a pizza - is that all 1 meal?
ReplyDeleteHi Tyler, Spencer shared your blog with me. I love following your journey. We have bard owls on our property and they are so loud. Rest up!
